For teachersThe need for greater financial literacy, particularly amongst teenagers, is becoming increasingly important. DollarsandSense aims to supplement the financial lessons teenagers learn in the classroom, and at home, in a way that informs and engages.
A collaborative effort
Research commissioned by the Commonwealth Bank indicates that young people aged 14 to 17 years recognise the importance of financial management skills and knowledge, but don’t rate their own understanding or competence in this field very highly. Parents surveyed also perceive a significant gap between the levels of understanding they believe their children should have, and what is actually the case.
DollarsandSense has been developed in consultation with Curriculum Corporation, curriculum experts from all State and Territory education departments. Along with the Commonwealth Bank e-learning awards for primary schools, it is just one of the many Commonwealth Bank youth education initiatives. We welcome your feedback.
Adding value
DollarsandSense includes information that’s relevant to teenagers’ daily experience, plus interactive tools to help them learn by doing. The site is split up into sections that cover saving, budgeting, employment, borrowing, lending, operating a business, consumer issues, and an overview of essential financial services.
The site provides an opportunity to apply some of these life skills. Its 'Dream Generator' assists teenagers to financially plan to achieve a goal.
